Unseasonal Rain and Cool Weather Cause Drop in Tamil Nadu’s Power Demand
Tamil Nadu has seen a drop in electricity demand because of unseasonal rain and cooler weather over the past few days. The state, which usually faces high power usage during the summer, is now using less electricity than expected.
Officials from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) said that the lower temperatures have reduced the need for fans, air conditioners, and coolers in homes and offices. As a result, people are using less power, and the overall electricity demand in the state has gone down.
Normally, during May, Tamil Nadu records high power demand because of rising temperatures. But this year, unexpected rainfall and cloudy weather have helped cool the atmosphere. In many places, people even reported cooler nights and early mornings, which further reduced the need for electrical cooling devices.
TANGEDCO tracked the daily power usage and noticed a clear drop of about 1,000 to 1,500 megawatts in overall demand. For example, the state’s usual peak demand during this time is around 17,000 megawatts, but recent figures show usage dropping to about 15,500 megawatts.
This sudden drop in power demand has helped the electricity board manage its resources better. It has reduced the pressure on thermal power stations and allowed the board to rely more on wind and solar power. Since wind conditions are improving in the southern parts of the state, TANGEDCO has increased its use of wind energy to supply power.
Experts believe that if the cool weather continues, the state can save fuel costs and improve energy efficiency. However, they also warned that power demand could rise again if the temperature goes up in the coming weeks.
In conclusion, the unseasonal rain and pleasant weather have brought temporary relief to Tamil Nadu’s power system. The lower electricity usage not only helps the environment but also eases the load on the power supply network.
