U.S. Halts $4 Billion Aid to Israel
US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States plans to stop providing nearly $4 billion in annual military assistance to Israel by the end of this year. Trump said Israel no longer needs financial support from Washington, although the US would continue to help if requested and allow Israel to purchase American weapons.
The announcement marks a potential change in the long-standing military relationship between the two countries. Israel has received substantial military and economic assistance from the United States for several decades.
The current military assistance agreement was signed in 2019. Under the agreement, the United States is committed to providing Israel with approximately $4 billion annually until September 2028. Trump’s announcement has raised questions about the future of this arrangement and its impact on defence cooperation between the two countries.
The decision has also created concern among some Israeli political leaders. Gadi Eisenkot, a leader of the Israeli opposition, criticized Trump’s announcement and blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for creating uncertainty in relations with Washington.
Eisenkot’s criticism reflects concerns about the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic and military ties with the United States. American assistance has played a significant role in supporting Israel’s defence capabilities and military operations.
Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has been one of the largest recipients of American military and economic assistance. The support has helped strengthen its military capabilities and maintain close cooperation between the two countries.
Trump’s announcement could have important implications for future US-Israel relations. Although he indicated that Washington would continue to provide support when needed, the proposed end of regular military aid has raised questions about how the partnership will develop in the coming years.
