Vijay Faces Majority Test Before Swearing-In

Chennai: Uncertainty continued on Friday over the formation of a new government in Tamil Nadu led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay.

Although Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as a major force in the 2026 Assembly elections, he has not yet been invited to officially form the government.

According to reports, Tamil Nadu Governor R. V. Arlekar informed Vijay that the swearing-in process can proceed only after he proves he has majority support in the State Assembly.

This means Vijay must secure enough backing from other legislators or parties to cross the required majority mark before taking office as Chief Minister.

The governor’s stance has added to the ongoing political uncertainty in the state, where alliance discussions and support negotiations are still continuing.

Amid rising speculation, TVK general secretary N. Anand addressed party MLAs and urged them to remain calm and not panic.

His comments came after party legislators, who had been staying at a resort in Mamallapuram, arrived at the party headquarters in Panaiyur.

The use of resorts to house MLAs is often seen as a strategy to prevent political defections during sensitive government formation periods.

TVK leadership is reportedly working actively to maintain unity within the party while also seeking external support to strengthen Vijay’s claim to power.

As political developments continue rapidly, Tamil Nadu remains in a state of suspense, with the final shape of the next government still uncertain. The coming days are expected to be crucial in deciding whether Vijay can gather the support needed to officially become Chief Minister.
