Vijay’s TVK Crosses Majority, Set to Govern

In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Vijay, created a major political upset by winning 108 seats in its first election.
However, the party needed 118 seats to form a clear majority government in the 234-member Assembly.
To reach the required number, TVK began discussions with several parties including Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
In a major political development, Congress is reported to have left its earlier alliance with the DMK and joined hands with TVK. At the same time, CPI, CPM, VCK, and IUML have also extended their support to TVK, while still maintaining their ideological positions in broader alliances.
With this combined support, TVK’s strength has reportedly increased to 120 seats, crossing the majority mark.
This has paved the way for Vijay to become the 17th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a historic political shift in the state.
Following these developments, DMK leader and former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin reacted by extending his wishes for the new government.
In his post on social media platform X, Stalin said he offers his greetings to the people of Tamil Nadu and referred to his emotional connection with his political mentor M. Karunanidhi.
With coalition realignments and new political equations emerging, Tamil Nadu is witnessing a dramatic change in its political landscape, with TVK now set to form the next government.
