Virat Kohli Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Record
India’s batting star Virat Kohli reached another major milestone in ODI cricket on Sunday, becoming only the second player in history to score 15,000 runs in the format.
Kohli achieved the landmark during India’s match against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. He scored 59 runs, taking his career ODI tally beyond 15,000 runs and creating another record in his international career.
The biggest achievement was the speed at which Kohli reached the milestone. He crossed 15,000 ODI runs in just 303 innings, breaking the previous record held by legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar.
Tendulkar had reached 15,000 ODI runs in 377 innings in 2007. Kohli therefore reached the landmark 74 innings faster than his former India teammate, setting a new benchmark for reaching 15,000 runs in ODI cricket.
Kohli also recorded his 80th ODI half-century during the match. The fifty came in his 315th ODI appearance and added another achievement to his already impressive list of batting records.
Despite Kohli’s latest milestone, Tendulkar continues to hold the record for the highest number of runs in ODI cricket. He finished his ODI career with 18,426 runs, a record that remains one of the biggest landmarks in the format.
Kohli’s achievement comes nearly two decades after Tendulkar first reached the 15,000-run mark. By surpassing Tendulkar’s record for the fastest 15,000 ODI runs, Kohli has added another chapter to the long statistical comparison between the two Indian batting greats.
The 59-run knock against the West Indies was therefore significant beyond the match itself. It allowed Kohli to join an exclusive group of players who have crossed 15,000 ODI runs while also setting a new record for reaching the milestone in the fewest innings.
Kohli has remained one of India’s most consistent ODI batters throughout his career. His latest achievement further highlights his longevity and consistency in international cricket.
