West Bengal Government Challenges Stay on Investigation in National Anthem Insult Case

The West Bengal Government has approached the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, contesting an earlier order that stayed any investigation by Kolkata Police against BJP legislators accused by the Trinamool Congress of insulting the National Anthem within the state Assembly premises. The state government is challenging the stay issued by a single-judge Bench on December 7, which restrained any investigation until January 17.

The case has become a matter of prestige for the Trinamool Congress, and the government is determined to pursue it. The incident occurred on November 29, triggering a complaint by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who alleged derogatory slogans were raised by BJP MLAs during a protest. The court, while staying the investigation, questioned the merit of the case and emphasized that the National Anthem should not be used for political purposes.
