Will ICC Ban Jaiswal for Face-off with Fernando?
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in a heated exchange with Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando during the second Test match in Colombo.
The incident happened after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal for 45 runs during the 17th over of India’s innings. Jaiswal had looked confident at the start of his innings and had hit Fernando for three consecutive boundaries. However, Fernando came back strongly and eventually ended the Indian batter’s innings.
After taking the wicket, Fernando celebrated with his Sri Lankan teammates. He also made animated gestures in Jaiswal’s direction. Jaiswal appeared unhappy with the celebration and walked towards the bowler.
The two players then exchanged words, and the situation quickly became tense. During the confrontation, Jaiswal and Fernando made physical contact and bumped heads.
Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva, along with other players and the umpires, immediately stepped in to separate the two cricketers. The situation was brought under control before it could develop further.
The incident could attract the attention of the International Cricket Council (ICC) because players are expected to maintain discipline and avoid physical contact or personal abuse during international matches.
Under the ICC Code of Conduct, different levels of punishment can be given depending on the seriousness of an offence. A minor incident could result in a warning or fine, while a more serious offence could lead to suspension from matches.
If the incident is considered a lower-level offence, Jaiswal could face a warning or financial penalty. However, a more serious classification could result in a heavier punishment. The exact action will depend on the match officials’ report and the ICC’s review.
At the time of reporting, the ICC had not announced an official decision regarding the incident. Therefore, it remains unclear whether Jaiswal or Fernando will face any disciplinary action.
Despite the controversy, India finished the first day of the second Test in a strong position at 300/5. Devdutt Padikkal scored a century, while Shubman Gill made an important half-century to help India build a strong total.
India had already won the first Test in Galle by 165 runs, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the series. Padikkal was named Player of the Match in that game after his impressive century.
The second Test is therefore important for both teams. India will be looking to strengthen its position in the series, while Sri Lanka will hope to fight back and level the series.
The Jaiswal-Fernando incident has added extra attention to the match, but the focus will now return to the cricket as both teams continue their battle in Colombo.
