WRD Awaits Government Approval for Flood Mitigation Projects in Chennai and Environs

The Water Resources Department (WRD) is awaiting government approval for flood restoration and mitigation projects in Chennai and its surrounding areas, including Chengalpattu district. The proposed projects, valued at ₹350 crore, aim to permanently restore waterbodies and river stretches affected by the floods in December.

Cyclone Michaung caused damage to crucial reservoirs like Cholavaram and Red Hills, impacting Chennai’s drinking water supply system. While temporary repairs have been made, the WRD is seeking funds for permanent infrastructure repairs and flood prevention measures. The government is expected to issue a directive approving the projects this week, allowing the WRD to proceed with restoration efforts.
