New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken strict action against a Gujarat-based company for selling misbranded alkaline water that contained banned ingredients and violated several food safety regulations.
The action was initiated after a consumer complaint raised concerns about the company’s product quality and labeling practices.
Following the complaint, FSSAI officials inspected the company’s manufacturing unit in Gujarat and found multiple violations.
Authorities discovered that the alkaline water product lacked proper labeling, ingredient declarations, and other mandatory packaging details.
Officials also found black particles and discoloration in the bottled water, raising serious safety concerns.
Laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of fulvic acid, a banned ingredient not permitted in packaged drinking water under FSSAI regulations.
Investigators reported that this prohibited substance had been added through mineral additives, making the product non-compliant with food safety standards.
As a result, FSSAI seized stock worth over ₹31 lakh and launched legal action against the company under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The regulator emphasized that strict enforcement is essential to protect consumers from unsafe, misleading, or falsely marketed products.
This case has also raised concerns about the rapidly growing health beverage market, where certain products may make wellness claims without meeting proper safety requirements.
FSSAI has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that food and beverage products sold in India are safe, accurately labeled, and compliant with all national regulations.
