Greater Chennai Corporation Installs Shade Pavilions at Traffic Signals

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has introduced shade pavilions at 10 major traffic signals to provide motorists relief from the scorching sun. Constructed with 5.3-meter steel bars and porous fabric, these pavilions are designed to accommodate heavy traffic areas. To ensure safety during the rainy season, modifications will be made to the pavilions, adding additional components to the structure.

Responding to motorists’ requests, the GCC plans to collaborate with the Highways Department to install similar pavilions along highways. This pilot project, costing approximately ₹3.5 lakh per shelter, will be expanded to include 165 signals identified by the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). The pavilions will eventually be converted to arched structures with polyvinyl chloride panels, offering a more durable and efficient solution.
