Lakshadweep Wednesday Vehicle Ban Sparks Concerns
Residents of Lakshadweep have expressed concern over a new government order that bans vehicles on all islands every Wednesday. Many islanders fear that the move will affect their daily work and income. They feel the administration has taken the decision without fully understanding the ground realities of life on the islands.
The Lakshadweep administration recently issued an order declaring every Wednesday as “No Vehicle Day.” The order was signed by District Collector and Secretary (General Administration and Protocol) Dr R Giri Shankar. It states that no vehicles will be allowed on the roads across all islands on Wednesdays.
According to the administration, the measure has been introduced to promote better health among residents. Officials said the aim is to encourage people to walk or cycle instead of using motor vehicles. The order also mentions that reducing vehicle use will help lower pollution caused by exhaust emissions.
However, many residents have raised objections. They say that transportation is essential for daily activities such as fishing, small businesses, government work, and emergency services. Some islanders worry that restricting vehicles, even for one day a week, could disrupt their routine and affect livelihoods, especially for those who depend on transport to earn their income.
This decision comes just four months after another controversial order that made police clearance mandatory for plucking coconuts in Andrott and Kalpeni islands. That move had also drawn criticism from local residents.
While the administration says the ‘No Vehicle Day’ is aimed at promoting health and protecting the environment, islanders are urging authorities to reconsider the decision or provide exemptions for essential services. Discussions are likely to continue in the coming days as residents seek clarity on how the order will be implemented.
