Sri Lanka’s Coastal Areas Safe After Indonesia Earthquake

Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre has confirmed that all coastal areas in the country are safe after a powerful earthquake struck near Indonesia. The earthquake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale and happened at around 6:48 a.m. local time in the Molucca Sea, located between Sulawesi and Maluku Islands.

After the quake, the US Geological Survey warned that waves up to 30 cm high could hit nearby coastal areas in Indonesia. It also mentioned that smaller waves might be seen in nearby countries. However, Sri Lankan officials quickly confirmed that there was no danger to their coastline.

In Indonesia, the earthquake caused damage in some areas. One person was reported dead after buildings collapsed due to the strong shaking. Many people were frightened and ran out of their homes to stay safe as the ground shook.

Following the earthquake, tsunami alerts were issued in several countries, including Philippines and Malaysia. Emergency teams were put on alert, and people were advised to stay cautious. However, after monitoring the situation, authorities in all affected regions confirmed that no dangerous or destructive tsunami had occurred.

Overall, while the earthquake was strong and caused fear and some damage in Indonesia, nearby countries, including Sri Lanka, remained safe with no major impact reported.
