Italian PM Meloni Visits Gulf for Energy Security
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Jeddah on an unexpected trip and met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. They talked about strengthening their countries’ ties and ways to boost cooperation. The meeting also covered regional issues, especially how recent military actions affect international shipping and energy supplies, as well as the global economy. Both leaders agreed on working together to ensure stability in the region.
Meloni’s visit is part of a two-day tour that includes stops in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Her trip comes during rising tensions with Iran, which has been attacking areas in the Gulf. This is the first time a European Union leader has visited Saudi Arabia since the US-Israeli conflict against Iran began earlier this year.
The main goal of Meloni’s visit is to show support for Gulf countries facing Iranian threats while ensuring Italy gets enough energy resources. Officials said Italian companies like Eni plan to continue investing in Gulf energy projects. Italy already provides defensive weapons to Gulf nations and could send more if needed. Before the conflict, Qatar supplied about 10% of Italy’s gas needs, while oil from West Asia made up 12% of Italy’s imports last year.
However, Italy has been told that a Gulf supplier will delay liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments due to risks near the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, 10 LNG cargoes set for April to June won’t be sent. Additionally, Iranian attacks have reduced regional production. Qatar Energy’s CEO recently said strikes had cut 17% of Qatar’s LNG export capacity.
