Odisha Introduces Compensatory Irrigation Plan

The Odisha Government has introduced new rules for industries that want to use land meant for irrigation. These rules say that companies must follow a system called “compensatory irrigation.”

This means that if an industry uses land where water is already supplied for farming, it must create irrigation facilities in another area to make up for the loss. This idea is similar to “compensatory afforestation,” where trees are planted to replace forests that are cut down.

The government says that both agriculture and industrial growth are important for the state. Farming supports food production and livelihoods, while industries help create jobs and improve the economy.

So far, the government has tried to avoid allowing industries in areas where crops depend on irrigation, also known as ayacut lands. These areas are important for farmers and food production.

However, officials also understand that in some cases, it may not be possible to completely avoid using such land for development projects. In those situations, the new rules will help ensure that the loss of irrigation is balanced by creating new irrigation systems elsewhere.

Overall, the policy aims to support development while also protecting farmers’ needs and maintaining agricultural productivity.
