Lightning Strikes Kill 14 in Bangladesh Storms

At least 14 people have died in Bangladesh after lightning strikes hit several areas during strong thunderstorms called Kalbaishakhi. Many others were injured in these sudden storms, which affected seven districts across the country.

The storms came after a week of very high temperatures and heatwave conditions. When the weather changed suddenly, powerful winds, rain, and lightning caused serious damage. The worst-affected area was Gaibandha District, where five people lost their lives. Sirajganj District, Jamalpur District, and Thakurgaon District each reported two deaths. One death each was reported in Bogura District, Natore District, and Panchagarh District.

Apart from human casualties, some cattle were also killed after being struck by lightning. Many people in rural areas, especially farmers and outdoor workers, were affected as they were outside during the storms.

Rain and thunderstorms were also seen in Dhaka and parts of Rangpur Division, Mymensingh Division, and Sylhet Division. This brought some short-term relief from the intense heat.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has said that more scattered rain may happen in the coming days, which could help bring down temperatures further.

Lightning deaths are common in Bangladesh during the pre-monsoon season. Experts say there is a need for better awareness among people, improved weather warning systems, and safer shelters, especially for those living in villages and working outdoors.
