U.S. Lawmakers Push Bill to Protect Places of Worship from Attacks

In response to growing threats against places of worship, particularly those of minority faiths, U.S. lawmakers have introduced a new bill aimed at safeguarding Hindu temples and other religious sites from harassment and intimidation. The proposed legislation, known as the SACRED Act, would make it a federal crime to interfere with people near houses of worship.

The measure was put forward by Representative Tom Suozzi in the U.S. House of Representatives. It seeks to address concerns about rising attacks and threats near religious sites, which have affected communities like Hindus, Muslims, Jews, and Sikhs. Under the bill, individuals who break the law could face fines or up to one year in prison for first-time offenses. Repeat offenders could face harsher penalties, including up to three years in prison.

The bill also allows victims of such acts to take legal action by filing civil cases. Authorities, including the U.S. Attorney General, can request court orders to stop harmful actions and seek compensation for damages.

In recent years, hate crimes in the United States have increased, with religious minorities often targeted. Lawmakers argue that this bill is designed to protect both public safety and constitutional rights, which guarantee freedom of religion. As tensions tied to domestic and global issues continue to rise, the aim is to ensure that all faith communities can practice their beliefs without fear of violence or disruption.
