Citizenship Rules Updated: Changes for OCI Cardholders
The Union Home Ministry of India announced important changes to the country’s Citizenship Rules on April 30, 2026. These updates mainly aim to make citizenship-related services more modern by introducing digital systems for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders and people applying for Indian citizenship.
The new rules are designed to simplify application procedures, improve transparency, and make documentation easier through online processes. Officials say the digital system will help applicants complete formalities more efficiently.
One major addition to the updated rules concerns minor children. The government has clearly stated that a child cannot hold a foreign passport while also possessing an Indian passport at the same time. This rule applies to all citizenship cases involving minors.
The Home Ministry said this clarification is necessary to avoid legal confusion, conflicting nationality claims, and administrative misunderstandings. By clearly defining passport and citizenship rules for children, authorities hope to ensure smoother processing and better compliance with Indian law.
These amendments reflect the government’s effort to modernize citizenship management while also tightening regulations where needed. The changes are expected to impact OCI cardholders, citizenship applicants, and families dealing with dual nationality issues involving children.
