Trump Warns Taiwan Against Independence from China

Trump’s comments come as tensions over Taiwan continue to remain a major issue in US-China relations. Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te, has previously stated that Taiwan does not need to officially declare independence because it already considers itself a sovereign and independent nation.

For many years, the United States has maintained a careful balance in its Taiwan policy. Under US law, Washington provides Taiwan with defensive weapons to help strengthen its security. At the same time, the US officially follows the One-China policy, which recognizes Beijing’s position that there is only one China and does not formally support Taiwan’s independence.

China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and strongly opposes any move toward formal independence. Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly emphasized that Taiwan’s separation from China is unacceptable.

In a recent interview, Trump said he had extensive discussions with Xi Jinping about Taiwan during his visit to China. However, Trump declined to clearly state whether the United States would militarily defend Taiwan if China were to attack.

He also noted that Xi strongly opposes any actions that suggest Taiwanese independence, reflecting the seriousness of the issue for Chinese leadership.

Within Taiwan, most citizens see themselves as belonging to a separate national identity, but many prefer maintaining the current status quo—remaining self-governed without formally declaring independence or seeking political unification with China.

Trump’s remarks underline the delicate geopolitical balance surrounding Taiwan, where any major political shift could have significant consequences for regional stability and international relations.
