Tagore’s Craft Revives Life After Tragedy

The doors of St. Francis Mission Home in Kuravilangad, Kottayam, are still open, but the atmosphere inside has changed completely. The place that was once filled with prayers, students, conversations and daily activities is now unusually quiet.

The sounds that once made the mission home feel lively have disappeared. The ducks that used to move around the yard, the hens searching for food and the small kitchen garden are no longer part of the familiar scene. The quiet surroundings reflect the painful changes that have taken place there.

For one survivor of Bishop Franco’s case, however, an unexpected activity became a source of comfort. In the middle of the emptiness and painful memories, she found peace through the simple work of making cow dung patties, a traditional practice associated with rural life.

The craft gave her something meaningful to focus on. What may appear to be a very ordinary household activity became an important part of her effort to rebuild her life.

The tradition of making cow dung patties has also been linked to Rabindranath Tagore, who introduced and promoted such rural practices in Bengal. Over the years, these simple traditional activities have remained connected with village life and self-reliance.

For the survivor, the activity became more than just a traditional craft. It provided a sense of routine and helped her deal with the emotional impact of the events connected to the mission home.

Her story shows how simple activities can sometimes provide strength during difficult periods. Working with her hands and following a familiar traditional practice gave her a way to regain a sense of control and move forward.

The empty surroundings of St. Francis Mission Home continue to carry memories of its past. But the survivor’s journey also represents a small sign of hope. Through an unexpected craft, she has found a way to cope with painful memories and begin rebuilding her life.

Her experience highlights the importance of finding support, purpose and peace after difficult experiences. Sometimes, even a simple traditional activity can become an important step toward healing and a new beginning.
