Aaron Judge’s Home Run Helps Yankees Secure Postseason Berth
Aaron Judge ended his home run drought in a big way as the New York Yankees secured another place in the Major League Baseball postseason. Judge hit a three-run home run against the Minnesota Twins on Monday night, while the Yankees officially earned their record 61st postseason berth and their ninth playoff appearance in the last 10 years.
The Yankees secured at least an American League wild-card spot after the Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Detroit Tigers. The result confirmed that New York would return to the postseason, giving the team another chance to compete for a World Series title.
Judge’s home run came with two outs in the eighth inning. Facing Minnesota pitcher A.J. Minter, Judge launched a three-run shot that increased the Yankees’ lead to 7-2. It was his first home run since May 24.
Judge had only recently returned to the lineup after missing more than three months because of a fractured rib. His start after returning had been difficult. Before Monday’s game, he had gone just 3-for-20 and had struck out 11 times.
Despite those struggles, Yankees manager Aaron Boone remained positive about Judge’s progress. Boone said the star hitter has been making better decisions at the plate, swinging at good pitches while avoiding pitches outside the strike zone. The manager believes Judge is getting closer to finding his best form.
The Yankees entered the game four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Tampa Bay had already secured a postseason place on Friday.
New York will now look to build momentum as it prepares for another playoff run. The Yankees are hoping to win their first World Series championship since 2009.
The team has also dealt with major injury problems this season, with 18 players spending time on the injured list. However, the Yankees have been particularly effective when Judge has been available. With Judge in the lineup, New York had a 40-24 record, averaged 5.17 runs per game, and hit .243 with 86 home runs.
Without Judge, the Yankees went 46-39 and scored fewer runs per game, although they still produced 107 home runs during that period.
Judge’s return and his latest home run could give the Yankees an important boost heading into the postseason. Boone is confident that with more games, Judge can continue improving and reach his best level when the team needs him most.
