U.S. Analyst Hails India’s Successful BRICS Summit Hostship
US-based analyst Michael Kugelman has praised India’s hosting of the 18th BRICS Summit, describing the event as a successful demonstration of New Delhi’s ability to bring together countries with different political and economic interests.
The two-day summit concluded in New Delhi on Sunday under India’s leadership. A major outcome of the meeting was the adoption of the New Delhi Declaration 2026, which reflected the group’s shared positions on several global economic and security issues.
Kugelman highlighted the declaration as an important achievement for India. He said it demonstrated New Delhi’s ability to build consensus among BRICS members despite differences between the countries.
BRICS currently consists of 11 major emerging economies. Together, the group represents nearly half of the world’s population and around 40% of global economic output. The summit brought together several prominent leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On Saturday, the leaders unanimously adopted the New Delhi Declaration. The document expressed strong concern over trade measures that the group believes can distort international commerce and go against the rules of the World Trade Organization.
The declaration also called for greater international cooperation to fight terrorism, prevent conflicts and settle disputes through peaceful means. These issues remain important as countries face growing geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
Kugelman also pointed to the economic importance of stronger cooperation within BRICS. The group is seeking to increase trade and economic ties among its members, potentially reducing dependence on Western-led economic institutions and financial systems.
Greater internal trade could be particularly important for countries facing tariffs, sanctions and other economic restrictions linked to US policies. By increasing trade among member states, BRICS countries could create more opportunities for businesses and strengthen economic cooperation.
The summit also highlighted India’s growing role within the group. By successfully bringing together countries with different positions on international issues, India demonstrated its ability to encourage dialogue and cooperation.
The New Delhi Declaration therefore represents more than a formal statement. It reflects BRICS members’ efforts to coordinate their positions on global trade, security and economic development while strengthening cooperation among emerging economies.
Kugelman’s comments underline the significance of India’s leadership at a time when BRICS is seeking to expand its influence in the global economic and political system.
