Foreign Diplomats Send Birthday Greetings to PM Modi

Foreign diplomats and diplomatic missions have extended birthday greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he turns 76 on September 17, 2026. Among those who sent wishes was former Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim, who spoke about changes he believes India has experienced during Modi’s time in office.

Solheim highlighted five areas that he said have seen major changes: India’s economic development, infrastructure growth, environmental progress, its growing role in global affairs and a stronger sense of national confidence. His comments were made as part of his birthday message to Modi.

Infrastructure has been one of the major areas of focus during Modi’s tenure. The government has highlighted the expansion of highways, airports, railways and metro networks as part of its development efforts. The Prime Minister’s Office has also pointed to improvements in transport and connectivity across the country.

Renewable energy and environmental policies have also received greater attention. India has significantly expanded its non-fossil fuel energy capacity in recent years, although challenges remain in areas such as electricity transmission and energy storage.

Economic growth and poverty reduction have also been central parts of the government’s development narrative. The Prime Minister has cited government programmes aimed at improving living standards and expanding opportunities for poorer and middle-class households. Independent economic assessments, meanwhile, continue to examine both India’s growth and the structural challenges facing the economy.

Birthday greetings have also come from diplomatic missions, including the embassies of Nepal and Belgium in New Delhi. These messages reflect the diplomatic exchanges that take place between India and other countries on important occasions.

Solheim’s comments provide one foreign observer’s view of developments in India under Modi’s government. Other assessments of India’s economic and social progress can differ depending on the indicators and time period being considered.

The birthday messages have therefore drawn attention not only to Modi’s political career but also to the broader changes taking place in India’s economy, infrastructure, energy sector and international engagement.
