Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder Detained at UN Netanyahu Protest

Actresses Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, along with comedian Caleb Hearon, were among protesters detained by the New York Police Department during a demonstration near the United Nations in New York City on Thursday, September 24.

The protest took place as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly. Reports said roughly 100 people were taken into custody during the demonstration. The Guardian also reported that Sarandon and Hearon were detained by the NYPD.

Photographs from the scene showed Sarandon sitting near the protest area while waiting to be taken away by police. Einbinder was also seen being escorted from the demonstration by officers. The protest was held near First Avenue and East 39th Street, close to the UN headquarters.

Protesters organized a sit-in and demonstrated against Netanyahu’s visit and Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Organizers and participants expressed their political views through chants, signs and speeches. These views were those of the protesters and organizers.

The NYPD had said ahead of the UN General Assembly that it expected increased protest activity and would facilitate lawful demonstrations, while also stating that it would take action in cases involving violations of the law, violence or property destruction.

The arrests attracted additional attention because several well-known entertainers were among those detained. Sarandon has previously participated in political demonstrations, while Einbinder has also publicly expressed views on the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The demonstration occurred shortly before Netanyahu delivered his speech to the UN General Assembly. The protest and subsequent detentions became part of the wider public debate surrounding his visit to New York and his government’s policies toward the conflict in Gaza.
