Jos Buttler Breaks Record as England’s Best Limited-Overs Batter

England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler created history during the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Leeds by becoming the first English player to score more than 10,000 runs across ODI and T20I cricket combined.

Buttler reached the landmark with an impressive innings of 69 runs from just 49 balls. His knock included five fours and five sixes and helped England stay in the chase. However, his innings ended when he was forced to retire hurt because of an injury.

The milestone highlights Buttler’s long and successful career in limited-overs cricket. Across 367 ODI and T20 matches, he has scored 10,062 runs at a strike rate of 37.12, including 13 centuries and 60 half-centuries.

In ODIs, Buttler has scored 5,678 runs, making him England’s third-highest run-scorer in the format. In T20Is, he is England’s leading run-scorer with 4,384 runs.

Despite Buttler’s contribution, England could not complete the chase in the second ODI. Sri Lanka secured a 16-run victory after putting up a strong total, with Kusal Mendis playing a major role by scoring a century.

England’s Tom Banton also produced a strong performance at the top of the order, while Buttler’s quick 69 kept England in the contest. However, Sri Lanka’s bowlers managed to control the final stages of the innings. Dilshan Madushanka and Eshan Malinga played important roles as Sri Lanka defended their total successfully.

The victory levelled the three-match ODI series at 1-1. With one match remaining, both teams will now look to make the most of the deciding game and finish the series with a win.
