Kerala Student Denied Free Bus Ticket Due to Gender Question

A student in Kerala has filed a complaint against a bus conductor after she was allegedly denied a free bus journey because the conductor questioned her gender.

According to the complaint, the student was travelling with a valid identity card that made her eligible for free travel under a government student transport scheme. She presented the required identification while boarding the bus.

However, the conductor reportedly appeared confused after looking at the student and issued her a ticket worth Rs 15 instead of providing the zero-value ticket available under the scheme.

The student questioned the conductor about the charge and explained that she was eligible for free travel. According to her complaint, the conversation then became uncomfortable when the conductor questioned her about her gender in an aggressive manner.

The student said the incident left her embarrassed and humiliated in front of other passengers. She subsequently decided to file a formal complaint over the conductor’s conduct and the refusal to provide the benefit available under the student travel scheme.

The complaint has been taken up for investigation by the concerned authorities. Officials are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the student was eligible for the concession and whether the conductor followed the required procedures.

The incident has also raised concerns about the importance of treating passengers respectfully while implementing government welfare and concession schemes. Students who qualify for travel benefits are generally required to carry valid identification or other documents to establish their eligibility.
