Muslim Girls Following Atheist Pages Raise Concerns: Keralam Minister

Kerala Local Self-Government Minister K. M. Shaji has raised concerns about changing social and intellectual trends among young Muslim women, including what he described as increased interest in atheist social media pages.

Speaking at the C. H. Mohammed Koya National Seminar at Calicut University, Shaji said community organisations need to better understand the changing aspirations and concerns of the younger generation. He questioned whether existing organisations are doing enough to engage with young Muslim women and provide guidance.

Shaji claimed that Muslim girls make up a large share of followers of atheist pages in Kerala. He presented this as a sign of broader social changes among young women and said community organisations should examine why these changes are taking place.

He also said that young Muslim women are increasingly involved in education, social issues and public movements. According to Shaji, their changing interests and concerns require greater attention from community organisations.

The minister questioned whether organisations that describe themselves as progressive have adapted sufficiently to the changing circumstances of the younger generation. He called for greater efforts to understand their concerns and engage with them constructively.

Shaji’s remarks have drawn attention to a wider discussion about changing attitudes among young Muslim women in Kerala and the role of community organisations in responding to those changes.
