After two decades, Chennai Traffic Police is set to revise the speed limits for vehicles in the city

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has decided to rationalize the speed limits for vehicles after 20 years. The decision will be taken after consulting all stakeholders and will be forwarded to the government for approval. The current speed limits were set in 2003, and the police recently installed speed guns at 10 locations across the city to monitor speeding vehicles.

However, the decision to issue instant challans for vehicles exceeding the 40 mph speed limit was put on hold due to public criticism. The committee responsible for revising the speed limits is headed by Kapilkumar C. Saratkar, the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

The committee’s first meeting was held, involving experts from Anna University and IIT-Madras, citizen action groups, regional transport officers, and traffic police officers. The new speed limits will be implemented after the government’s approval.
