Amazon Faces Lawsuit Over Tariff Price Hikes
Amazon.com Inc has been sued by consumers who are seeking refunds for extra costs they say were wrongly added to product prices due to tariffs. The lawsuit was filed on Friday, May 15, 2026, in a federal court in Seattle.
The consumers claim that Amazon passed on tariff-related charges to customers by increasing the prices of imported goods. They argue that these tariffs were later ruled unlawful by the U.S. Supreme Court, which means the added costs should not have been collected from buyers.
In the proposed class action case, the plaintiffs allege that Amazon collected hundreds of millions of dollars through these price increases. They say customers ended up paying more for everyday imported products because of the tariff charges included in retail prices.
The lawsuit argues that Amazon raised prices before the Supreme Court made its final decision, and therefore the company should refund the money collected from customers. It also seeks compensation for all affected consumers who may have overpaid during that period.
Amazon has not yet publicly responded in detail to the lawsuit. The case will now proceed in federal court, where judges will decide whether the company is responsible for returning the alleged overcharged amounts.
The outcome of this case could have wider implications for online retailers and how tariff-related costs are passed on to consumers in the future.
