Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Extended Amid Ongoing Tensions

Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their ceasefire and continue talks aimed at reaching a long-term political settlement, according to an announcement made by the United States on Friday, May 15, 2026. The US said the two sides will also hold broader discussions in the coming weeks to reduce tensions and improve relations.

However, despite the agreement, the situation on the ground remains tense. Israel carried out new military strikes, saying these actions are not covered under the ceasefire deal. Israeli officials maintain that their operations are targeting threats and do not violate the terms of the truce.

In southern Lebanon, the Lebanese state news agency reported a deadly Israeli strike on a civil defence centre early Saturday, May 16, 2026. At least six people were killed in the attack, including three paramedics who were responding to emergency situations. Another 22 people were injured, raising concerns about civilian safety and the stability of the ceasefire.

The continued violence has raised doubts about how effectively the ceasefire is being followed by both sides, even as diplomatic efforts continue.

At the same time, international diplomacy involving Iran has also been developing. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that he had received messages from the United States expressing a willingness to continue talks. Speaking in New Delhi, he said Iran is open to dialogue and would welcome support from any country, including China, to help move negotiations forward.

These comments came shortly after US President Donald Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping had offered assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route. Trump also said that Xi had promised not to send military equipment to support Iran in its conflict with the United States and Israel.

Together, these developments highlight ongoing efforts by major world powers to manage rising tensions in the Middle East. While diplomatic talks are continuing, the situation remains fragile due to ongoing military actions and unresolved political disputes.
