Bangladesh’s Nuclear Plant Begins Fuel Loading

Bangladesh has taken a major step toward nuclear energy production as it started loading nuclear fuel at Unit-1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. This marks a significant milestone in the country’s history, as Bangladesh is set to become the 33rd nation in the world to generate electricity using nuclear power.

The process involves controlled fission and safety tests over several weeks before electricity generation begins. By August, the plant aims to supply around 300 megawatts of trial electricity to the national grid. Full commercial operation could take up to 10 months.

The Rooppur project is Bangladesh’s largest infrastructure initiative, supported by Russia through Rosatom. The plant has two units, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, totaling 2,400 megawatts.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met with Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom, to discuss energy security and project progress. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for Russia’s support, while Rosatom assured continued assistance.

Once operational, the plant is expected to provide about 10-12% of Bangladesh’s electricity needs, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and enhance long-term energy security.
