Biden to Host Ukrainian President Zelensky Amidst Stalled Congress Talks on Aid Deal

US President Joe Biden is set to host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Tuesday, marking Zelensky’s third visit since Russia initiated its war against Ukraine in February 2022. The meeting comes amidst stalled discussions in Congress on a Kyiv aid deal. Zelensky, invited to speak at an all-senators meeting, will also meet with House Speaker Mike Johnson.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the meeting underscores the US commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion, with discussions focusing on Ukraine’s urgent needs and the importance of continued US support. The leaders will also address further defense cooperation, joint projects for weapons and air defense systems, and the critical moment in congressional negotiations for emergency aid to Ukraine, which includes funding for Israel, Taiwan, and border operations. However, a deal remains elusive as Republicans seek ties to immigration-related policy changes.
