BJP and TMC Welcome Supreme Court Decision on West Bengal Vote Counting

The Supreme Court has made an important decision regarding vote counting arrangements in the West Bengal elections. On May 2, 2026, the court dismissed a petition filed by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which had challenged an earlier order of the Calcutta High Court.

The dispute began when the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a circular on April 13 about using central government personnel during the vote counting process. The TMC had opposed this move and approached the Calcutta High Court, arguing against the deployment. However, the High Court rejected the party’s plea.

Following this, the TMC took the matter to the Supreme Court, hoping for relief. But the apex court stated that no further action was required and dismissed the appeal.

Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the TMC have now welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict. Leaders from both sides said the ruling would help maintain fairness and transparency during the election counting process.

The decision is being seen as a significant step in ensuring smooth and unbiased election procedures in West Bengal, where political competition remains intense. The use of central personnel is intended to strengthen confidence in the counting process and prevent disputes over election results.
