Brewers Get Creative With Injuries Hinder Key Players
The Milwaukee Brewers are used to scoring runs without much power in their lineup. But they’re relying on this approach even more as top hitters Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio, and Andrew Vaughn recover from injuries.
In six of their last eight games, the Brewers have scored three or fewer runs. Despite this, they snapped a six-game losing streak by winning 2-1 in each of the past two days, using small-ball strategies to create rallies.
Shortstop Joey Ortiz explained, “It’s about doing the little things right. When guys get on base, we need to move them over and score.” During their last game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Ortiz executed a safety squeeze in the seventh inning to drive in the go-ahead run.
The Brewers have found creative ways to score runs lately. In one recent game, they scored two runs without hitting any balls out of the infield, using three consecutive bunts to break a tie.
Utilityman David Hamilton added, “We’re not hitting well as a team right now, so we’re doing whatever it takes to make something happen.”
This resourcefulness has been key to their success. Last year, despite ranking 22nd in homers, the Brewers led the majors with 97 wins and had the third-highest run total in the league.
Outfielder Sal Frelick even joked that they might have gotten some help from Mother Nature during a game when rain caused the roof at American Family Field to leak. This allowed him to reach base on an error, leading to runs.
Despite facing adversity, the Brewers have shown resilience. They’ve won three straight NL Central titles and manager Pat Murphy praised their ability to bounce back after setbacks.
With key players injured and six games on the road ahead, the Brewers will need to keep finding ways to manufacture runs. Their recent performance shows they’re up for the challenge.
