BRICS Faces Challenges but Remains United

The recent BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting in Delhi ended without a joint statement due to disagreements between Iran and UAE over the West Asia conflict. Despite this, the Chair Statement supported India’s initiatives and the Palestinian cause. Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira emphasizes that BRICS remains significant as a platform for dialogue, even with diverse positions among its members.

Vieira highlights that while reaching consensus can be challenging, especially with new members like Iran and UAE, he is confident that BRICS will find common ground by the upcoming summit in India. He notes that many issues already have majority agreement and believes the summit will resolve differences.

He acknowledges the difficulties in managing such a diverse group but stresses the importance of maintaining dialogue. Vieira also addresses concerns about whether the expansion process was too swift, stating it was carefully considered with a focus on shared values like Security Council reform.

The minister expresses hope for a unified stance on issues like the Gaza conflict, despite differing perspectives among members. He underscores Brazil’s criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza while acknowledging varying stances within BRICS.

Vieira dismisses the idea that BRICS is anti-West, emphasizing it as a neutral grouping of developing nations focused on collaboration and development. He also clarifies that Brazil’s proposed alternative payment mechanisms do not aim for de-dollarization but rather to explore local currency transactions.
