CBI Arrests CGST Superintendent in Mumbai for Accepting Bribe

A superintendent of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) from Bhiwandi commissioner in Mumbai has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh. The arrest comes after a complaint was filed against the CGST superintendent, identified as Hemant Kumar, accusing him of demanding an undue advantage of Rs 30 lakh to settle a pending GST matter for a company.

The accused reportedly negotiated the bribe amount down to Rs 15 lakh. Acting on the complaint, the CBI formed a team, conducted a trap operation, and apprehended the accused red-handed while accepting the initial installment of Rs 5 lakh.

Subsequent raids at the accused’s office and residences in Mumbai and Ghaziabad led to the discovery of approximately Rs 42.70 lakh in cash, documents related to assets, and incriminating evidence. The arrested individual was presented before a CBI special judge in Mumbai and has been remanded to police custody until August 21.
