Chennai Corporation’s Plan for Local Entertainment Hubs Near Lakes

The Greater Chennai Corporation has unveiled plans to create local recreation and entertainment hubs near lakes in various parts of the city. As part of this initiative, the second phase of the Villivakkam tank eco-restoration project will be launched in an 8.5-acre area, in addition to the existing 27.5-acre project. The civic body aims to develop more lakes for entertainment in locations like Korattur, Retteri, Perungudi, and Porur to cater to the leisure needs of local residents.

Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan emphasized the goal of providing easily accessible entertainment and relaxation spaces within neighborhoods, reducing the need for residents to travel to distant destinations like Mamallapuram or Marina Beach. The focus will be on creating parks, playfields, and lakes while preserving the water-spread areas.

Villivakkam Lake will be inaugurated in two stages, with the initial phase featuring a refurbished lake and a hanging bridge. Additional entertainment areas for children and open-air theaters will follow. The civic body is also considering public-private partnership (PPP) options for a 27.5-acre amusement park adjacent to the lake. Plans are underway for the enhancement of other lakes, including Porur, Korattur, Retteri, and Perungudi, ensuring their ecological and habitat requirements are met, and contributing to water harvesting efforts in times of heavy rainfall.
