CMDA Initiates Lake Rejuvenation Project in Chennai Metropolitan Area

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has taken steps to rejuvenate ten significant lakes in the Chennai Metropolitan region. These lakes include Perumbakkam, Retteri, Mudichur, Madambakkam, Sembakkam, Ayanambakkam, Velachery, Adambakkam, Puzhal, and Kolathur.

Following an announcement in the State Assembly in 2022, the government allocated ₹100 crore for this lake rejuvenation project, which covers various aspects like strengthening bunds, walking and cycling tracks, open gyms, lake boundary enhancements, sewage treatment plants, thematic gardens, bird-watching facilities, and more.

The CMDA has selected ten landscape consultants through a national-level design competition to prepare Detailed Project Reports for the initiative, which aims to address issues like waterlogging and pollution in these lakes.
