Death toll in Nepal flash floods rises to 579 while 1924 people still missing; India steps up humanitarian assistance to neighbouring country
The death toll from the severe flash floods in Nepal and Tibet has risen to 579, while more than 1,924 people remain missing. The disaster has caused widespread destruction and created a major challenge for rescue and relief teams.
According to Nepal’s disaster management authorities, 579 bodies have been recovered so far. At least 101 injured people are receiving treatment in hospitals. Rescue teams are continuing their search for people who are still missing.
Thousands Affected by the Disaster
The people reported missing include hydropower project workers, foreign nationals, local residents, and government employees.
A large number of missing people are connected to hydroelectric projects. Officials said 933 missing people are linked to hydropower projects, highlighting the serious impact of the floods on the energy sector.
The list also includes 517 foreign nationals, adding to concerns among families and governments trying to locate their citizens.
India Steps Up Humanitarian Assistance
India has increased its humanitarian support for Nepal as rescue and relief operations continue.
A third aircraft carrying 10 tonnes of relief supplies reportedly left for Kathmandu. The supplies are intended to support people affected by the floods and assist ongoing relief operations.
India has been working with Nepal to provide emergency assistance and help those affected by the disaster.
Jaishankar Says India Will Support Nepal
India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said that India is fully supporting Nepal’s relief and recovery efforts.
India’s assistance is focused on providing essential supplies and helping Nepal deal with the effects of the disaster. More support could be provided depending on the needs identified by Nepalese authorities.
Indian Nationals Still Missing
The floods have also affected Indian citizens. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, 320 Indian nationals remain unaccounted for following the disaster.
