FIFA Introduces New Yellow Card Rule Change

FIFA has announced an important change to its rules on yellow cards for the World Cup to reduce the number of players missing key knockout matches.

According to the new update, FIFA will introduce an additional “amnesty system” for yellow cards during the expanded World Cup tournament in North America. This means that players’ yellow card records will be cleared twice during the competition.

The idea is to prevent players from being unfairly suspended for important elimination-stage matches just because of earlier bookings in the tournament.

The proposal was discussed at a meeting of FIFA’s ruling council on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and was later confirmed by FIFA in an official statement.

Under the current rules, players who receive two yellow cards in different matches are usually suspended for the next game. This has sometimes led to key players missing crucial knockout fixtures.

FIFA believes the new system will make the tournament fairer and allow more top players to feature in important matches, improving the overall quality of the competition.

The change will apply to the upcoming expanded World Cup in North America, which is expected to feature more teams and more matches than previous editions.

Officials say the goal is to balance discipline with entertainment, ensuring that important games are decided on the pitch with the best players available.
