Greater Chennai Corporation to Launch Intelligent Transport System Pilot Project in January

The Greater Chennai Corporation is set to initiate a pilot project for the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in January, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project, valued at ₹530 crore, involves the implementation of adaptive traffic signal control, red light violation detection, and traffic incident detection systems at various locations.

Bus shelters at prominent points like Park Station and Shanthi Theatre will receive a passenger information system, displaying estimated bus arrival times. The initiative aims to enhance traffic management and reduce signal stopping times, contributing to improved commuter and motorist experiences.

Design work is underway, and data collection from stakeholder departments is in progress, with the trial runs scheduled for January 2024. Upon completion, the project is anticipated to be expanded to additional locations across the city.
