Guindy Race Course Becomes Chennai Eco Park
One of Chennai’s most iconic landmarks, the Guindy Race Course, is being transformed into a large eco-park by the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops.
For many years, the Guindy Race Course was known for horse racing, where horses and jockeys competed in high-stakes events. Now, this historic location is being redesigned into a peaceful green space for the public.
Even though construction is still ongoing, the area is already becoming a calm and refreshing escape from Chennai’s busy city life.
The first phase of the project covers around 118 acres of land. As part of this development, the Greater Chennai Corporation has created four new ponds and deepened two existing lakes within the property.
These water bodies are designed not only to improve the park’s natural beauty but also to strengthen water conservation efforts.
In addition, special bio-swales have been built around the park. Bio-swales are natural drainage channels filled with plants and vegetation that help rainwater flow through the park while filtering it naturally.
This system allows rainwater to seep into the ground, helping recharge groundwater levels. It also plays an important role in reducing flooding in nearby areas during heavy rains.
The eco-park project is expected to improve Chennai’s environment by increasing green cover, supporting biodiversity, and creating a recreational space for residents.
Once completed, the transformed Guindy Race Course is likely to become a major urban green destination, combining environmental sustainability with public enjoyment.
