Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Raises Concern

Concerns are rising worldwide over the spread of the Hantavirus infection, especially after new cases were reported on a luxury cruise ship. Medical experts have clarified that this virus behaves very differently from COVID-19 and does not spread in the same way.
The incident involves the Netherlands-based luxury cruise ship MV Hondius, which began its journey on April 1 from Argentina. The ship had 150 tourists and 72 crew members from 28 different countries on board.
During the voyage, five people were found to be infected with Hantavirus. Sadly, three of them have died, which has caused serious concern in several countries.
Following the outbreak, international health agencies have started closely monitoring the situation. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that two Indian crew members working on the ship are also suspected to be at risk.
These two individuals have tested positive or shown signs of infection and are currently under strict medical observation by health authorities.
Officials have clarified that there is no immediate risk of the virus spreading to India at this time, as the cases are contained and linked to direct exposure on the ship.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has also stated that the situation appears to be limited to close-contact transmission within the ship environment.
Experts explain that Hantavirus is usually spread through rodents such as rats and mice, not through casual human contact like COVID-19.
However, in this case, doctors suspect that transmission may have occurred due to close contact among passengers and crew members in confined spaces.
Health authorities around the world continue to monitor the situation closely, while passengers and crew on the ship remain under observation.
