IPL TV viewership drops 26%: Harsh Goenka urges BCCI to restore cricket balance

IPL TV Viewership Down 26%: Harsh Goenka Asks BCCI to Fix Cricket Balance

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is losing popularity, with TV viewership dropping by 26%. Industrialist Harsh Goenka has criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), saying the league risks becoming less exciting. He shared his concerns on X, writing that IPL matches have turned into high-scoring, predictable games instead of true cricket contests.

Goenka suggested ways to make IPL more exciting. He wants balanced pitches where bowlers and batters have equal chances, not flat tracks favoring big hitters. He also called for changes to the Impact Player rule, which he believes gives an unfair advantage to batting teams. Goenka urged franchises to engage fans better through marketing and loyalty programs. Lastly, he highlighted the need for improved stadium experiences, including better facilities and easier access for fans.

While digital platforms have increased IPL’s reach to over one billion viewers across TV and online, the drop in traditional TV numbers worries BCCI and broadcasters. This could affect future media deals.

Current standings show teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru leading with strong performances.

Harsh Goenka’s message is clear: bring back the excitement and uncertainty that make cricket thrilling. The BCCI must act to keep IPL at the top of global T20 leagues.
