IIT-M to Assess Oil Quantity in Kosasthalaiyar River After Ennore Spill

The State government has engaged the expertise of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, to assess the quantity of oil in the Kosasthalaiyar river following the recent oil spill from the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited. The State-level oil spill crisis management group, led by Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena, conducted a review of the remediation efforts in Ennore. So far, approximately 276 barrels, containing 48.6 tonnes of oil waste, have been collected from the river.

The waste is estimated to contain around 15 tonnes of oil. The Mumbai-based Oil Spillage Response Service company, Sea Care Marine Services, has joined the efforts, deploying six trained individuals to enhance oil mitigation work. Chief Secretary Meena directed the Health Department to ensure continuous health services on the ground as part of the ongoing response to the oil spill.
