Indian Fans Might Miss FIFA World Cup 2026 Due to Broadcast Issues
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is just over a month away, but millions of Indian soccer fans may not be able to watch the tournament. This is because JioHotstar and FIFA have not reached an agreement on broadcast rights in India.
JioHotstar offered $20 million for the broadcast rights, which was much less than FIFA’s asking price of $100 million. Sony also talked to FIFA about the rights but decided not to make an offer. FIFA had reportedly asked for a similar amount as what it received for previous World Cups, but JioHotstar’s offer was too low.
JioHotstar’s lower offer is partly due to the matches being held late at night in India and a slowdown in advertising because of the war with Iran. Additionally, football is not a major sport in India compared to other countries.
FIFA has reached agreements with broadcasters in over 175 territories for the World Cup, which starts on June 11. However, negotiations in India and China are still ongoing and have been confidential.
The situation remains uncertain as the event approaches, leaving Indian fans hopeful but unsure if they will be able to watch the tournament.
