India’s Political Bloc Struggles to Unite

The question is both timely and tough: why hasn’t the India bloc tried to come together in a strong, unified way like the Janata Party did back in 1977 to fight against the powerful BJP-led NDA? The answer isn’t just one problem but a mix of challenges—conflicting ideas, unclear leadership, and a lack of common goals—that make it hard for opposition groups to work together.

To see why this hasn’t happened, we need to look back at history. In 1977, during the Emergency under Indira Gandhi, different political groups came together under the Janata Party banner to oppose authoritarian rule. They put aside their differences because the goal of restoring democracy was more important than anything else. This unity led to a major electoral win and created a strong moment of purpose and teamwork.

However, today’s India bloc hasn’t been able to match that kind of unity. The reasons are many—leaders don’t agree on key issues, parties have different priorities, and there’s no clear vision driving them forward. As a result, the opposition remains divided, making it hard to challenge the BJP effectively.
