IPL 2026: Bumrah’s New-Ball Impact Boosts MI Strategy
Mumbai Indians found a winning formula in IPL 2026 by giving Jasprit Bumrah the new ball against Gujarat Titans. Bumrah, who opened the bowling for the first time this season, struck immediately with his first delivery, dismissing Sai Sudharsan. This early breakthrough helped MI dominate the game, defending 199 with confidence.
Until then, MI had alternated between Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult as openers, with Bumrah bowling later. This approach yielded limited success, with only one win in five matches and no wickets for Bumrah. However, giving him the new ball proved effective, as he struck early and set a positive tone.
Experts noted the difference when Bumrah bowls first rather than after the powerplay. Faf du Plessis highlighted the potential long-term benefits of this change, while Abhinav Mukund pointed out how Bumrah’s impact is amplified with a fresh ball. Mukund also mentioned that modern T20 conditions, where swing decreases after a few overs, make early deployment of Bumrah even more valuable.
The psychological boost for MI was significant. The team’s belief and energy on the field were visibly renewed, creating momentum that carried them to victory. With this new strategy, MI aims to regain their winning edge in IPL, chasing their first title since 2020.
