Jailed Pakistan Ex-PM Imran Khan Moved to Hospital

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was taken to a hospital in Islamabad on Friday (August 21, 2026) for a medical checkup, according to his party. This move comes after long demands by supporters who have claimed that his health has worsened during over three years in prison.

The transfer happened following a Supreme Court order earlier this week and is seen as a possible step to reduce tensions between Khan’s party and Pakistan’s military, which have been conflicting since he was removed from office in 2022.

Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, announced that he was moved from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad after the Supreme Court’s directive. His lawyers stated that his health has deteriorated in prison and that he has lost much of his vision in one eye. The government, however, said that medical reports did not show any urgent need for treatment.

The Supreme Court had ordered on Tuesday that Khan, who is 73 years old, be moved to Shifa International Hospital within two days and allowed access to a group of doctors including his personal physician.

In an interview with Reuters, PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari called the ruling a “new ray of hope” but said the party would still proceed with a nationwide march on September 27. They aim to demand Khan’s release, faster hearings in his cases, and access to him.

Khan has been in prison since August 2023. He claims that the charges against him are politically motivated, a claim the government denies.
