Japan Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 213; 52 Still Missing

The death toll from the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture on January 1 has increased to 213, with 52 people still unaccounted for, according to authorities. As of Thursday morning, the number of injured individuals stood at 567. The hardest-hit areas include Suzu with 98 confirmed deaths, Wajima with 83, and Anamizu with 20.

In addition to the quake-related deaths, eight more fatalities have been confirmed due to deteriorating injuries or illnesses caused by the physical and mental strain in the aftermath of the disaster. Continuous rainfall since Tuesday has raised concerns about secondary hazards like landslides, prompting authorities to issue warnings. Over 26,000 people are taking shelter in evacuation centers, and approximately 3,100 individuals remain isolated due to road disruptions.
