Lalengmawia Ralte: The Only Indian to Face Brazil’s Vinicius Jr Twice

Lalengmawia Ralte, also known as Apuia, will feel a rush of memories as he steps onto the field at SaltLake stadium on Saturday to play against Brazil. Back in 2016, then a 15-year-old Ralte made history by being part of India’s U-17 team that faced Brazil in Goa. Despite Brazil’s star-studded lineup, which included Vinicius Jr, Ralte and his teammates gave a strong performance.

Brazil won the match 3-1, with goals from Santos, Brenner, and the young Vinicius Jr. Now, a decade later, Ralte is still part of India’s senior team and will face Vinicius Jr again—a historic second meeting in Indian football history.

While Vinicius has become one of Real Madrid’s top players, Ralte has played for several Indian clubs, including Indian Arrows, NorthEast United, Mumbai City FC, and now Mohun Bagan. His experience and skill have earned him a spot in India’s midfield for this crucial match.

Ralte remembers the 2016 game as a learning experience. Playing against Brazil taught him valuable lessons about teamwork, preparation, and discipline. Now, facing Brazil again will be an even bigger challenge. While India is ranked 138th in the world, Brazil sits at fifth place, but Ralte remains confident after India’s recent draw against Panama.

“I know it’s a tough game, but I won’t change my approach,” Ralte said. “I’ll do what I always do—give my best and follow the coach’s plan.”

A Barcelona fan, Ralte will miss playing against Raphinha, who is injured and not part of Brazil’s squad this time.

On Saturday, all eyes will be on Ralte as he takes on one of the world’s greatest teams.
